Fusión de culturas

  

La población de Pitrufquén se caracteriza por ser pluricultural, esto porque sus miembros tienen orígenes culturales distintos, destacando el legado histórico del pueblo mapuche, y la posterior inmigración proveniente de países como Italia, Alemania, Suiza, Arabia, Israel y Francia.

   

Actualmente, la mayor colonia extranjera está establecida en "Faja Maisan", constituida mayoritariamente por descendientes alemanes y suizos, cuyos abuelos llegaron a La Araucanía entre 1906 y 1912.

  

Su población es de 20.026 habitantes: 10.491 personas viven en el área urbana y 9.535 en sector rural. Las principales actividades productivas se concentran en los rubros ganadero, agrícola, forestal e industrial.

  

La ciudad de Pitrufquén dista a 30 Kms al sur de Temuco, por la Ruta 5 Sur, siendo un necesario lugar de paso para los turistas que continúan a las comunas lacustres de Villarrica o Pucón, o que se dirigen al sur del país.

 

Carreras a la chilena, Pitrufquén.

En Pitrufquén se encuentra un monumento al "Profesor Chileno", inaugurado en el año 1976, y cuyo diseño pertenece al director de Obras Municipales de ese entonces, don Víctor Carrasco Bouquillard. También existe en la ciudad un monumento erigido al mártir de Carabineros de Chile, Teniente Hernán Merino Correa.

  

Por sus calles el visitante puede conocer la Plaza Pedro Montt, de bello entorno paisajístico; y la Plaza de Los Héroes, donde se encuentran los monumentos en homenaje a Dagoberto Godoy, Hernán Merino Correa, Arturo Prat e Ignacio Carrera Pinto.

   

Historia

 

   La primera población se asentó en la zona en el año 1836, cuando habitaban en ella 290 personas que desafiaban el futuro estimuladas por la donación de terrenos por parte del cacique Felipe Paillalef.

   

Se conocen dos versiones sobre el origen de la palabra Pitrufquén. Una de ellas afirma que deriva de los vocablos mapuches: "piti", pequeño, y "lauquen", mar. La otra que significa entre cenizas o muchas cenizas, como derivación de "piti" y "truquen".

  

A partir de 1898, Pitrufquén empieza su desarrollo gracias al impulso de su gente y a su potencial agrícola. En esa época se terminan los trabajos del ferrocarril que llega a la ciudad, una vez terminado el puente de estructura metálica sobre el río Toltén. Sus habitantes, que vivían en la parte alta del pueblo, comienzan a descender al plano, construyendo sus casas cerca de la estación del ferrocarril. La constitución del primer municipio se realizó el 3 de mayo de 1903.

Pitrufquén

 

Pitrufquén is a town that is located in the southeast part of La Araucanía, approximately 30 km from the capital city of the region, Temuco. It offers world-class tourist resources because of the quality and variety of its gastronomy and the warmth of its people.

 

 

Tourist Attractions of the Town

 

Balneario Isla Municipal:

 

It is located on the banks of the Toltén River. It has a camping area, which provides artificial light and drinking water. It also has a playground for children and suitable space for practicing sports, especially trekking.

 

Piscina Municipal:

 

This modern and spacious swimming pool, dependent on the town council of Pitrufquén, is located in a natural environment.

 

Toltén River:

 

This river is suitable for practicing sport fishing from its banks or from rowboats. There are rowboats and rowing services.

 

Mixture Of Cultures

 

Its people are characterized by their pluralistic cultures. This is because of the different cultural origins of the population, especially the cultural heritage of the Mapuche people, and the subsequent immigration of people from countries like Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Arabia, Israel and France.

Nowadays, the most important community of foreigners is settled in Faja Maisan. It is made up mainly of German and Swiss descendants whose ancestors arrived in La Araucanía between 1906 and 1912.

Pitrufquén has a population of 20,026 inhabitants; 10,491 persons live in the urban area and 9,535 in the rural area. The main source of income is from cattle raising, agriculture, forestry and industry.

This town is located approximately 30 km from Temuco, in the southern part of the region via the Ruta 5 Sur highway, and is unavoidable for people going to the lakeside areas of Villarrica and Pucón, or to the southern part of the country.

In this town there is a monument to the Chilean teachers called “Monumento al Profesor Chileno”, which was unveiled in 1976 and designed by the director of Public Works in that day, Mr. Víctor Carrasco Bouquillard. What is more, there is another monument to the martyr of the institution Carabineros de Chile, Teniente Hernán Merino Correa.

Through the streets, the visitors have the possibility to visit the Plaza Pedro Montt square, which has a beautiful and landscaped environment, and the Plaza Los Héroes square, where there are monuments to Dagoberto Godoy, Hernán Merino Correa, Arturo Prat and Ignacio Carrera Pinto.

 

History

 

The first colonizers settled in the zone in 1836, when there were only 290 people living there, defying the future, encouraged by a donation of land made by Cacique Felipe Paillalef.

There are two versions about the origin of the word “Pitrufquén”. One of them states that it comes from the Mapuche words “piti” that means “little”, and “lauquén” that means “sea”. The other one states that it means “among ashes” or “a lot of ashes”, a derivation of the words "piti" and "truquen".

In 1898, Pitrufquén began to develop due to the impetus of its people and to its agricultural capacity. During that period, the metal structured bridge over Toltén River was built, and soon after the railway was completed.

Its people, who used to live in the high part of the town, began to move to the flat land, building their houses near the railway station. The constitution of the first town council was made in May 3rd, 1903.
